Unit 23 Future development of HCI (D1)

Future developments of HCI
In this blog I am going to discuss the possible future developments of HCI.
Iholo (Phone Prototype)
The Iholo is a phone prototype which will take mobile to higher heights because it could use as a hologram which could be able to provide virtual screen in 3D  for the user. the hologram would be able to provide a controller which could have a similar of a house hold console like the Xbox or PlayStation controller. This could become a thing in years to come because handheld games seem to be coming more popular because they are handy for people who do not have the time to go on to consoles and can only play one game or two, also children nowadays seem to like to play on mobile devices. Iholo would be able to be integrated into learning because they could make specific games for the schools examples of this includes learning the alphabet, learning time tables etc, Teachers might be able to make their own game to help suit each students individual needs, which would impact our everyday life because this means that we might be able to teach in more enjoyable fashion which could help more students to stay engaged  in the lesson which could mean that more children enjoy school and pass exams, which would mean that people of the future would be able to get better jobs. Also the Iholo might be able to make browsing the web simple so that all ages will be able to browse the web with ease, This could bring families in the future to spend more time together or even apart, but we have to see. Iholo phone can be used in many different way the phone could be used to make lesson more entertaining the students and making sure that they enjoy the lesson but whiles they are still getting the work done because a common issue that students have nowadays is they get distracted by their phones, but with this phone the teachers may be able to teach the work on the phones and giving a test and then if they get a 75% they will be able to play a maths game that is linked to the topic they are teaching an example of this could be let's say division. The phone can be used for a multitude of different subjects. The phone can be a big change because they may be able to make more students enjoy going to school  which will mean if they enjoy going to school more likely they are to pass their exams. If these phones do get get implemented in lesson, the lesson will be very different to the ways that I learnt but I think that the lessons will be more entertaining for all of the students and maybe even the teachers. Since phones nowadays are the most used device is the mobile phone for students in schools, i think that in the future it will more of the same so if it is that mean the students will love to use this phone in their lessons, this can completely change the way some students think about school.

Robots (Advanced)
In the future they might be robots that are able to be teachers or even personal helpers and many more things, an example of this is if a child in a lesson is finding timetables hard the robot might be able to describe and explain how to times to different numbers together. Also robots might even be able to solve problems that are brought to society that we might not notice until it is to late an example of this could be hackers because some small companies may not have the best security and the robot could have the job of checking to see if anything that is not meant to be coming through, if so they would be able to alert a member of staff. Robots could have a major impact in our everyday life because they could be use to very advanced or even very simple. this could be important because the world is getting more advanced with the technology, some of the jobs in the future might only be down by specific people and robots. Robots could also be used to help people with walking difficulties because they could be used to motivate people to do things they don't want to do. Also they might even be doctors, dentists etc, In the future Robots could be integrated in our everyday life to make basic things such as walking the dog you might be able to get a robot to do it for you. Robots are be made which may be able to take the place of  teachers or even be helpers to students because some students in schools don't really like asking the teacher for help or answering questions when they are asked to, the robots could be used to make the student feel more relaxed and if the robots asked them to answer a question they though that they won't be judging them. I think that schools would be able to use robots for one on one talks and tutorials because I believe that students will find it easier to concentrate and get on with their work because robots may be able to make boring subjects in to enjoyable ones. Robots may even be able to be used to help students which may have disabilities because in some cases those people don't have many friends even that is sad to say but the robots could be used as a personal buddy to them if they need one because in schools some people aren't the most popular they may need someone to keep them happy or even motivated. Robots can be used in many different ways in schools but we with have to see if they do get implemented in different roles in schools.

Overall future development of HCI
Overall I believe that the future development of HCI will play a massive part in the future societies because they are almost endless possibilities. In the future I believe that the world is going to keep to on getting more advanced, an example of this could be protecting us from cyber-attacks in the future we might be able to use robots to counter hackers and prevent cyber-attacks, which could prevent important information being taken away from the government etc. There may be different developments of HCI in the future besides the one I am have discuss in this blog and like I have said many times the developments i have discussed above some of them have been advanced since I first wrote this blog I am going to explain one of them which is the advanced robots their was a video that was posted on YouTube which was showing of the advancement of the robots the video title was Atlas, The Next Generation which is just showing how reports are able to get themselves back up after falling down which is showing us how quickly they are processing in the robots industry. So this may show that robots being used in schools may be closer than we think. But for the other development the phone I haven't seen anything about it because it was a prototype and the phone may be in development but I am not really to sure when and how they may be finished this may be because the phone is going to provide a 3D virtual screen that which produce a hologram which may be to far in advancement to what we are at no, the closest we are at the moment virtual reality, But we will have to see.

Unit 23 Task 1 principles of HCI design

Unit 23- Principles of HCI design:

There is many different principles of HCI design which include  Fitts's law, Buxton 3 state model key action model. which are going to be explained below with diagrams to help explain each.

Fitts's Law
Firstly I am going to tell you about Fitts's law. Fitts's laws states that time is necessary to reach the goal depending on the size of the goal, If an object is bigger it seems closer and makes it easier to use. For example it is a good idea to increase size of buttons
what we are using more often than other's. This can make a interface more effective an example of this is is on the bottom of a form there is send and deleted button's. to make this more effective we could make the send button bigger which will be good for users that have visual impairments because this will mean that they will be able to see the icons they want to click on, this will mean that this program will be more user friendly  which means that more user with learning disabilities can view this site and use it efficiently.

Buxton 3 State Model
Buxton 3 state model is used to determine how easy it is to move a mouse or a wheel and will measure how much pressure a user puts on it and how much dexterity and speed used during the specific action. There are 3 state model and they are the following (Below)
  • Tracking: for moving an item around the screen, an example of this is a cursor
  • Out of range: Used to show re-positioning and clutching of the mouse
  • Dragging: Checking the time it takes you to drag an object across the screen or to group chosen objects together

Key action model
Key-Action Model allows you to look at how users will interact with keyboards and therefore what kind of shortcuts they will use to carry out tasks.
This will show how what the user is expecting the computer to do when you try to use certain shortcuts and what the computer will actually do when you press the shortcut.
The buttons on a keyboard can be categorized into 3 sections:
  • Symbol:  These can deliver graphic symbols such as letters (qwerty), numbers (263237) or symbols (!"£$%^&*@) which can then be inputted into a text editor such as word or notepad
  • Executive key: these are actions that are used and placed at the application or system-level. The keys that are used in executive situation would be the ENTER, F1 or ESC keys.
  • Modifier key: these don’t actually type anything but they allow you to change what the next key-press will actually type for example the SHIFT key, if you press the shift key and then the number 5 for example it will put this %

Colors:
  • Luminance: overall brightness of a computer screen
  • Pop-out effect: distinction in colours
  • Trichromacy: normal human vision, having perception of three main colours
Pattern:
Perception used on my blog
  • The text size that i have chosen the right size and stands out clearly so that it is easy for the user to see this is important because not of the user who may view my blog may not be able to read the text because they may have colour-blindness or any other visual impairment, so when you are designing a blog or anything you have to bear in mind that some viewers may not be able to see you work in a some colors. A way you could solve this is by having a button where the user can change the colour of the text if needed; this will mean that your blog for this example will be friendly to users with visual impairments.
  • I have chosen to use black text on a white background because it is very east and clear for people without visual impairments and people with as well. This may be good for some users but others may find it hard, a way to solve this  issue is by making sure that if they do have a problem reading you give them an option to change the colour of the text or even the background. This will make their experience better because they may be able to read your work.
  • All of the images I have chosen are very clear, If users with visual impairments need to adjust the size of the pictures they are able to click on the picture and chose a size ranging from Small to X-large. I have decided to do this because I thought that if someone with troubled eyesight they would be able to change the size of the image on the fly which means if they needed to change the size they could click on the image and chose on the size they want ranging from small all the way up to X-large.
  • It is easy to navigate my blog, all you need to is scroll up and down. Making a blog that is simplistic can be very effective because not all users are tech wizards so they may find it hard if they have to click on a button to change topic. With my blog I was trying to make it has easy to use a possible because they are many different people who may view and look at my work. Making your blog simplistic is good because the user is able to view your work in a much organised way because all they have to do in scroll up and down the page to find the information they want.
  • My font type is Arial because it is simple and easy to read. I have decided to use the font type Arial because I believe that it is very easy to read because you can clearly see what all of the letters in a work are, this is good because reader that may struggle with other font types can read your work, but on the other hand if the use doesn't like the text font you may include a button which will change the text to whatever they want it to be an example is Calibri.
  • I have chosen the color that I have because it is relaxing on the eyes. Choosing a suitable coulour is very important when it comes to make a blog because you don't want colours that won't complement each other which may lead to user not being able to read you work because of your colour choice. But sometimes the colour you have chosen may be perfect for a lot of the user but they may be some that will find it hard to read your work with that colour background. A way you would be able to solve this issue is by including a button that will let the user change the colour of the background when they chose.

Unit 23 P1: The impact of HCI on Society and the Economy and Culture

Unit 23 P1: The Impacts of HCI on Society, Economy and Culture

Impact of HCI on Society and Culture
HCI has many impacts on society, which can be seen in the video which was title electric dream which highlighted some of the problems that which affected family life like in the 1970’s the family was socialising a lot because the lack of technology, but compared to the 1990’s it was the complete opposite they were less social and would spend more time by themselves. Also the behaviour changed of the family because in the 1970’s the kids of the family really appreciated the minimal gadgets/ gifts that they were getting in the 70’s. Compared to the 1990’s it was completely different because there were a lot of gadgets instead of getting very minimum which made the children in the family to started to argue which gadgets that they were getting. Before the technology was given to the family in the video were spending time with each other, like playing board games and riding bikes but when the technology came In the family slowly starting to stop playing and spend time with each other an example of this is when the children in the video got to have a console in their room and they had to decide which one to put in the each room. The boy in the video wanted to have one of the consoles, but he got the other console because the dad flipped a coin to make it fair and the boy in the video was not too happy because he said that the girls would not share with him. You could say that technology has made us come further a part from our families then we would like to but in nowadays it is normal to spend most of your time in your own room, instead of spending time with family.

Impact of HCI on the Economy
There are many impacts that HCI has on Economy. Firstly in the 1970's most of the things we brought was made in the Britain because the countries that nowadays dominate the manufacturing market like Japan and China were not as well off as they are nowadays because they used to be poor in the 1970's. But now in 2015 Britain does not make anywhere as near as much as they did in the 1970's like as I said above nowadays China and Japan are now the places where we buy are goods from which can range from Technology to tables and etc,This is because of the fact that it is now cheaper to produce goods abroad instead of being made in Britain. Most of the big companies nowadays build factories/ warehouses abroad because they know it is cheaper and in the long run they will get more money. This means that most companies in the future will most properly make factories abroad because they know that they will be able to save money, which means they will keep and earn more money. Also in the video you could see that the technology was very expensive in the 1970’s and 80’s, but the nineties on the other hand the technology was cheaper than it was 10-20 years ago but they were paying less for better products instead of more for the technology. Technology has also changed the way we work because in the video the man of the family works in an office and without a computer he found it extremely hard to get his work done on time he had to use a typewriter , also in the video he went to work but since he did not have a phone or a computer he could not find out if he had to go to work, this was because the roads were iced over, but he went to work and he found when he got their than an email had been sent but he had nothing to view the email on.

Impacts of HCI on personal and family time.

There are many impacts that HCI has on the way that people decide to spend their time, this may be by themselves or with the family. In the section I am going to be discussing what people use to do in their spare time in the 1970's and compare it with nowadays. The first point I am going to discuss is that in the 1970's families spend more time together this may be playing board games, chatting or even having tea you could say that back in those days that the family were more upfront and enjoyed spending time together. Also the way people use their personal time has changed because in the 1970's the children of the family would have it quite easy because they were allowed to go outside and have some fun to do whatever they choose along as it was not dangerous, some of these activities included bike riding, playing tag and many more. But on the other hand for the parents they had it harder especially for the mother of the family because she would have to cook for the family which would take hours on end because the equipment she had to use was a tiny stove which took forever to light and if though it did light it would easy to out but that's not all the mother had to clean the whole house, washing up, laundry etc. But on the hand for the dad of the house he would have to go to work every day and he would come back late around 5/6 pm which would mean for the mother of the house she would have wait until the dad came back from work to start the tea, the dad when he got home would basically just wait for tea and then spend some time with the family if they had time.

Nowadays is completely different to the 1970's let's start by talking about children, children nowadays tend to spend less time with the family because they have electronics which includes PC, Xbox, PlayStation etc children get drawn in the to the gaming world because they is so may different genres of video games out there for them to try and some of the can take 100 hours to fully complete, but one thing that kids love to use more than consoles is their phones they are practically addicted to them they would use them all the time if they had the chance. Now let's talk about the parents the mother and father would have less of a stressful time cooking because all of the key inventions like the microwave, oven and many more which speeds up the time things take to cook which mean if the mother does want to chill for a bit they will have the chance because they aren't stuck cooking for hours on end and also in the 1970's the dad didn't have to help the mother cook, but nowadays they will both cook, this can also apply to other household jobs. If the parents wanted to they can give the children chores to do like do the washing up, taking the bins out for collection etc. The mother and father nowadays have a vase choice of what they want to do with the family or with each other they could spend time watching TV, Netflix, series, if the parents decided they wanted to go and have a day out with the kids they could take them to the movies, bowling, park, mini golf and many more. The point I am trying to get across here is that family nowadays typically spend less time together then families in the 1970's.
