Unit 23 P1: The Impacts of HCI on Society, Economy and Culture
HCI has many impacts on society, which can be seen in the video which was title electric dream which highlighted some of the problems that which affected family life like in the 1970’s the family was socialising a lot because the lack of technology, but compared to the 1990’s it was the complete opposite they were less social and would spend more time by themselves. Also the behaviour changed of the family because in the 1970’s the kids of the family really appreciated the minimal gadgets/ gifts that they were getting in the 70’s. Compared to the 1990’s it was completely different because there were a lot of gadgets instead of getting very minimum which made the children in the family to started to argue which gadgets that they were getting.
Impact of HCI on the Economy
There are many impacts that HCI has on Economy. Firstly in the 1970's most of the things we brought was made in the Britain because the countries that nowadays dominate the manufacturing market like Japan and China were not as well off as they are nowadays because they used to be poor in the 1970's. But now in 2015 Britain does not make anywhere as near as much as they did in the 1970's like as I said above nowadays China and Japan are now the places where we buy are goods from which can range from Technology to tables and etc,This is because of the fact that it is now cheaper to produce goods abroad instead of being made in Britain. Most of the big companies nowadays build factories/ warehouses abroad because they know it is cheaper and in the long run they will get more money. This means that most companies in the future will most properly make factories abroad because they know that they will be able to save money, which means they will keep and earn more money. Also in the video you could see that the technology was very expensive in the 1970’s and 80’s, but the nineties on the other hand the technology was cheaper than it was 10-20 years ago but they were paying less for better products instead of more for the technology. Technology has also changed the way we work because in the video the man of the family works in an office and without a computer he found it extremely hard to get his work done on time he had to use a typewriter , also in the video he went to work but since he did not have a phone or a computer he could not find out if he had to go to work, this was because the roads were iced over, but he went to work and he found when he got their than an email had been sent but he had nothing to view the email on.
Impacts of HCI on personal and family time.
There are many impacts that HCI has on the way that people decide to spend their time, this may be by themselves or with the family. In the section I am going to be discussing what people use to do in their spare time in the 1970's and compare it with nowadays. The first point I am going to discuss is that in the 1970's families spend more time together this may be playing board games, chatting or even having tea you could say that back in those days that the family were more upfront and enjoyed spending time together. Also the way people use their personal time has changed because in the 1970's the children of the family would have it quite easy because they were allowed to go outside and have some fun to do whatever they choose along as it was not dangerous, some of these activities included bike riding, playing tag and many more. But on the other hand for the parents they had it harder especially for the mother of the family because she would have to cook for the family which would take hours on end because the equipment she had to use was a tiny stove which took forever to light and if though it did light it would easy to out but that's not all the mother had to clean the whole house, washing up, laundry etc. But on the hand for the dad of the house he would have to go to work every day and he would come back late around 5/6 pm which would mean for the mother of the house she would have wait until the dad came back from work to start the tea, the dad when he got home would basically just wait for tea and then spend some time with the family if they had time.
Nowadays is completely different to the 1970's let's start by talking about children, children nowadays tend to spend less time with the family because they have electronics which includes PC, Xbox, PlayStation etc children get drawn in the to the gaming world because they is so may different genres of video games out there for them to try and some of the can take 100 hours to fully complete, but one thing that kids love to use more than consoles is their phones they are practically addicted to them they would use them all the time if they had the chance. Now let's talk about the parents the mother and father would have less of a stressful time cooking because all of the key inventions like the microwave, oven and many more which speeds up the time things take to cook which mean if the mother does want to chill for a bit they will have the chance because they aren't stuck cooking for hours on end and also in the 1970's the dad didn't have to help the mother cook, but nowadays they will both cook, this can also apply to other household jobs. If the parents wanted to they can give the children chores to do like do the washing up, taking the bins out for collection etc. The mother and father nowadays have a vase choice of what they want to do with the family or with each other they could spend time watching TV, Netflix, series, if the parents decided they wanted to go and have a day out with the kids they could take them to the movies, bowling, park, mini golf and many more. The point I am trying to get across here is that family nowadays typically spend less time together then families in the 1970's.
