Unit 23 Task 1 principles of HCI design

Unit 23- Principles of HCI design:

There is many different principles of HCI design which include  Fitts's law, Buxton 3 state model key action model. which are going to be explained below with diagrams to help explain each.

Fitts's Law
Firstly I am going to tell you about Fitts's law. Fitts's laws states that time is necessary to reach the goal depending on the size of the goal, If an object is bigger it seems closer and makes it easier to use. For example it is a good idea to increase size of buttons
what we are using more often than other's. This can make a interface more effective an example of this is is on the bottom of a form there is send and deleted button's. to make this more effective we could make the send button bigger which will be good for users that have visual impairments because this will mean that they will be able to see the icons they want to click on, this will mean that this program will be more user friendly  which means that more user with learning disabilities can view this site and use it efficiently.

Buxton 3 State Model
Buxton 3 state model is used to determine how easy it is to move a mouse or a wheel and will measure how much pressure a user puts on it and how much dexterity and speed used during the specific action. There are 3 state model and they are the following (Below)
  • Tracking: for moving an item around the screen, an example of this is a cursor
  • Out of range: Used to show re-positioning and clutching of the mouse
  • Dragging: Checking the time it takes you to drag an object across the screen or to group chosen objects together

Key action model
Key-Action Model allows you to look at how users will interact with keyboards and therefore what kind of shortcuts they will use to carry out tasks.
This will show how what the user is expecting the computer to do when you try to use certain shortcuts and what the computer will actually do when you press the shortcut.
The buttons on a keyboard can be categorized into 3 sections:
  • Symbol:  These can deliver graphic symbols such as letters (qwerty), numbers (263237) or symbols (!"£$%^&*@) which can then be inputted into a text editor such as word or notepad
  • Executive key: these are actions that are used and placed at the application or system-level. The keys that are used in executive situation would be the ENTER, F1 or ESC keys.
  • Modifier key: these don’t actually type anything but they allow you to change what the next key-press will actually type for example the SHIFT key, if you press the shift key and then the number 5 for example it will put this %

Colors:
  • Luminance: overall brightness of a computer screen
  • Pop-out effect: distinction in colours
  • Trichromacy: normal human vision, having perception of three main colours
Pattern:
Perception used on my blog
  • The text size that i have chosen the right size and stands out clearly so that it is easy for the user to see this is important because not of the user who may view my blog may not be able to read the text because they may have colour-blindness or any other visual impairment, so when you are designing a blog or anything you have to bear in mind that some viewers may not be able to see you work in a some colors. A way you could solve this is by having a button where the user can change the colour of the text if needed; this will mean that your blog for this example will be friendly to users with visual impairments.
  • I have chosen to use black text on a white background because it is very east and clear for people without visual impairments and people with as well. This may be good for some users but others may find it hard, a way to solve this  issue is by making sure that if they do have a problem reading you give them an option to change the colour of the text or even the background. This will make their experience better because they may be able to read your work.
  • All of the images I have chosen are very clear, If users with visual impairments need to adjust the size of the pictures they are able to click on the picture and chose a size ranging from Small to X-large. I have decided to do this because I thought that if someone with troubled eyesight they would be able to change the size of the image on the fly which means if they needed to change the size they could click on the image and chose on the size they want ranging from small all the way up to X-large.
  • It is easy to navigate my blog, all you need to is scroll up and down. Making a blog that is simplistic can be very effective because not all users are tech wizards so they may find it hard if they have to click on a button to change topic. With my blog I was trying to make it has easy to use a possible because they are many different people who may view and look at my work. Making your blog simplistic is good because the user is able to view your work in a much organised way because all they have to do in scroll up and down the page to find the information they want.
  • My font type is Arial because it is simple and easy to read. I have decided to use the font type Arial because I believe that it is very easy to read because you can clearly see what all of the letters in a work are, this is good because reader that may struggle with other font types can read your work, but on the other hand if the use doesn't like the text font you may include a button which will change the text to whatever they want it to be an example is Calibri.
  • I have chosen the color that I have because it is relaxing on the eyes. Choosing a suitable coulour is very important when it comes to make a blog because you don't want colours that won't complement each other which may lead to user not being able to read you work because of your colour choice. But sometimes the colour you have chosen may be perfect for a lot of the user but they may be some that will find it hard to read your work with that colour background. A way you would be able to solve this issue is by including a button that will let the user change the colour of the background when they chose.
